IF you’re looking to enjoy an evening at the theatre and like a good comedy, look no further than the Glórach Theatre in Abbeyfeale this weekend, says PRO Lorcan Curtin.

“After a wildly successful opening last week in which they achieved two full houses, the Abbeyside Players return to the stage this week with their production of the Sam Cree comedy, Second Honeymoon,” he explains, adding that performances will run this Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

“The play is set in the seaside boarding house of Mrs Liggett, a formidable landlady with strict rules and who is constantly chastising her flighty maid, Vera, a young woman whose mind is firmly focused on men,” Lorcan continues, outlining the bones of the play.

Mrs Liggett’s guests for the week are a true mélange of characters;  the earthy Frank McIlroy and his wife Agnes; the snobbish Mrs Mansfield and her hen-pecked husband Walter;  the braggart and practical joker Malcolm Adair; the young Mitchell couple and Victor the eccentric.

As if that were not enough, an American sailor joins the motley lot and the offbeat Miss Harnett also checks in for the week making for a  Throw in an American sailor and the offbeat Miss Harnett.

“It all makes for a good recipe for much laughter,” says Lorcan.   The vacation is to prove an unforgettable one for all the protagonists involved, as their initial holiday plans go ever so slightly awry over the course of the week.

“A very enjoyable comedy, and the best Sam Cree script I have come across,” commented Nick Cotter, who plays the lead role of Frank McIlroy.

Director Merce Hobson admitted it was a considerable challenge casting a play with thirteen characters, but added: “It has been wonderful to see so many new faces take to the stage for the first time and also deliver such tremendous performances.” She also praised the more experienced actors for their helpful approach towards the beginners.

Among the debutants, she included Molly the Dog, “who has taken to the stage like a natural, and is one of the most placid creatures I have ever come across.”

Booking for Second Honeymoon is strongly advised, and to secure your seat for any of the performances you can ring 087-1383940.

The curtain goes up each night at 8pm.
