UL Drama Society celebrates its 50th anniversary with production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ this November
THE UNIVERSITY of Limerick Drama Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary this November with its upcoming production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
The show has a cast of 17 actors who have been rehearsing since September, and over 10 crew members who have been working behind the scenes to bring the world of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to life.
Chairperson of society, Shauna McNamara, said, “UL Drama Society was at a really noteworthy point in its history. Not only has our beloved theatre, the Jonathan Swift, been recently renovated, but we are also celebrating our 50th anniversary as a society on the November 17.

“This semester was a product of 50 years of creatives, volunteers and performers, and we wanted to ingrain that idea into every aspect of our work,” said Shauna.
The play explores four nights of mischief, revelry and magic, during which a group of young lovers become victims of a curse, Fae royalty clash over the custody of a Changeling child, and a group of amateur actors throw together a play for a royal wedding.
Director, Kaif Nadaf, said, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been about finding new life in a classic story. The words are still Shakespeare’s, but the humour, the relationships, and the energy feel very much our own. There are Queer relationships, there’s chaos, and there’s love in every form.”
The play will be performed on November 24 and 25 in the Jonathan Swift Theatre on the UL Campus. Doors open at 7pm, and the show begins at 7.30pm.
Tickets to the show are available to purchase online or at the door on the night.
