Sustainability audit on Limerick's flagship festival

Riverfest expected to draw thousands to city on May Bank Holiday weekend

Sustainability audit on Limerick's flagship festival

Riverfest draws thousands to the city each year

LIMERICK’s flagship summer festival will be subject to an audit on its environmental credentials.

The local authority has confirmed it has secured the services of a sustainability auditor for Riverfest 2025, which takes place across the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The auditor will report on a range of issues around Riverfest, Eugene Crimmins, the festivals and event officer with council wrote.

This will include waste management, energy use and the carbon footprint of the festival.

“On receipt of the auditor’s sustainability report for Riverfest 2025, festivals and events will review the remaining Limerick Council- run festivals and events in line with the sustainability goals,” Mr Crimmins added.

The news came to light following a notice of motion at this month’s full council meeting from Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey O’Mara which was passed.

“Limerick Council is so proud of Riverfest and rightly so. If you have tens of thousands of people engaging with something, you’re doing something right. This motion is intended to add another string to its bow, making it more environmentally sustainable and ensuring we can stand over it when it comes to minimising its environmental impact and making sure it’s around for many years to come,” he said.

His motion was seconded by Cllr Elisa O’Donovan.
