LIMERICK was at its very best this Saturday as tens of thousands of people descended on the city for Riverfest.
Queues stretched out of Arthur's Quay Park, which is home to the Riverfestival Village - the focal point of the bank holiday weekend celebrations.
There were sensational sights, smells and sounds at the barbecue competition on the city's boardwalk at Harvey's Quay. It was won by a team from House Limerick, who impressed the judges with a chicken dish with roast vegetables, and barbecue chicken wings.
Head chef at House Peter Gallagher said: "It's brilliant. The lads have obviously done a very good job. We are very proud of them."
Metropolitan district leader Cllr Olivia O'Sullivan was present at the barbecue.
She said: "There is a real buzz when you walk through the streets today. It's great we have a lot of water activities this year. The tide is with us this year. There's so much going on. The weather is with us - Riverfest feels like the start of the summer in Limerick."
Other attractions included the Free Drop event at Castle Street, the visit of a Defence Forces helicopter and a variety of water-based activities including Fly Boarding stunt shows.
The fun continues on Sunday when thousands of people will pound the city streets again, as the Regeneron Great Limerick Run also returns.
The skies over the river Shannon will be lit up with a spectacular fireworks display tomorrow night while Hermitage Green will perform at King John's Castle.
