The delayed Ryanair flight took off early this Friday morning from Fuerteventura to Shannon

A NUMBER of flights to and from Shannon Airport have been cancelled or delayed due to Storm Éowyn.

Mean speeds approached category one hurricane levels on the west coast, according to meteorological expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather.

Limerick Live was in contact with one passenger due to return home to Limerick from a holiday in Fuerteventura last night. Their 5.40pm flight on Thursday to Shannon was cancelled.

At 7.30pm, they told Limerick Live: “We are still in the airport awaiting a bus to take us to a hotel for the night."

At close to midnight, they said they had been bussed to a five star hotel in the very south of the island.

“We’re leaving again at 4.15am. They are telling us the flight will go at 7am,” they said.

And according to the Shannon Airport website the plane from the Canary Island is due to land at 11am.

However, many others haven’t been as lucky as a number of flights in and out of Shannan Airport have been delayed or cancelled due to the Status Red warning. Please click here for live airport information.

A spokesperson for Shannon Airport said this Friday morning: “Due to the impact of Storm Éowyn, airlines have cancelled a number of flights scheduled to depart and arrive at Shannon Airport this morning. As a result, many of our morning flights have been cancelled or delayed.

“The advice for intending passengers is to contact your airline directly or refer to their airline website/mobile app. for the most accurate and up-to-date flight information. Airlines will contact passengers whose flights have been impacted as a result of the weather warnings."

The spokesperson said Shannon Airport remains open and "our staff continue to monitor this extreme weather event".

"Our full schedule will resume once weather conditions permit. If your flight is impacted as a result of the weather warning, your airline will notify you directly in advance. Passengers are advised to check this before travelling to the airport.

"Further updates will be posted on Shannon Airport’s social media feeds over the coming hours," said the spokesperson.
