RESILIENT Treaty United secured their passage to Sunday's League of Ireland First Division play-off final for the first time ever following an enthralling 1-1 second-leg draw with Munster rivals Cobh Ramblers after extra-time at St Coleman’s Park on Tuesday evening.

Tommy Barrett's Treaty side arrived at St Coleman’s Park with a one-goal advantage after Joe Hanson’s 87th-minute winner in Friday evening’s 1-0 first-leg victory at the Markets Field.

A 93rd-minute Matthew Whelan goal levelled the tie before Eoin Martin became the hero for Treaty, equalising on the night and sending his side through 2-1 on aggregate.

Tommy Barrett’s men have now set up a showdown with Bray Wanderers on Sunday next in Athlone Town Stadium, with a 3pm kick-off. Tickets for the game in Athlone Town Stadium will be available tomorrow with details to come.

Bray defeated UCD 4-2 on aggregate also on Tuesday evening to reach the final.

Visitors Treaty United made a bright start, as a sixth-minute mix-up in the Rams’ defence gave Karl O’Sullivan a chance to break through on goal. His low shot, however, was well saved by Timo Martin, keeping the game scoreless.

Cobh’s first real opportunity came in the 12th minute. A quick throw from Cian Bargary fell to Cian Murphy, whose first-time effort stung the palms of Treaty’s goalkeeper.

As the game progressed, Cobh grew into their rhythm while Treaty settled into a low block, content to defend and counterattack. In the 27th minute, Welshman Iestyn Hughes went close, only for his effort to ricochet narrowly wide of Corey Chambers’ left-hand upright.

On the half-hour mark, Dylan McGlade lined up a dangerous free kick on the edge of the Treaty box, but his dipping effort was comfortably collected by Chambers.

After a sustained period of Cobh pressure, Treaty broke on the counter with Karl O’Sullivan leading the charge. The pacey former Sligo Rovers winger slipped a pass to Lee J. Lynch, whose shot was well parried by Timo Martin. From the recycled cross, Joe Hanson’s header lacked the necessary power to trouble the Rams’ goalkeeper.

On the stroke of half-time, Bargary unleashed a whistling effort that clipped the upright, providing a moment of anxiety for the travelling support in the Liam McMahon Stand.

Immediately after the restart, Jonas Hakkinen and John O’Donovan both went close, only to be denied by a wall of Treaty defenders. Moments later, Murphy tested Chambers again as Cobh pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

On the hour mark, Niall O’Keefe struck a rasper from the edge of the box, but Evan O’Connor threw himself in to deflect the ball out for a corner.

Ten minutes later, Treaty countered through Mark Byrne, who marauded forward before offloading to O’Sullivan. The West Limerick man squared the ball to the onrushing Lynch at the edge of the box, forcing a strong save from Martin.

With four minutes remaining, Bargary’s inswinging free kick forced a diving save from Chambers, narrowly tipping it over the bar. But Cobh weren’t finished.

However, in the third minute of added time, the Rams finally broke through, with substitute Matthew Whelan finding the net. The target man controlled the ball on the penalty spot and, with his back to goal, turned it into the bottom corner.

Treaty attempted an immediate response, with Mark Byrne flashing his effort agonisingly over the bar, sending the game into
extra-time.

Both sides pushed for a winner in extra-time, with Whelan and Griffin combining, only for Cobh to be denied by a reflex save from Chambers as both sides chased the decisive goal.

Moments later, at the other end, Lee Devitt went close with a curling effort.

In the final action of the first period, centre-half Eoin Martin drove forward from deep before linking up with Ben Lee in a one-two. Martin coolly finished into the bottom corner, much to the delight of the travelling support.

Immediately after the restart, Roy Lawlor almost doubled Treaty’s advantage, forcing a big save from Martin with his curling strike. Five minutes later Hakkinen rose highest in the Treaty box, but his header hit the side netting.

Treaty retained their aggregate advantage through the remainder of extra-time to book their passage into Sunday's First Division promotion play-off final.
