Russell prepares for first season at the helm of Treaty United Women's team

Treaty United women's manager Sean Russell is looking forward to the new season ahead

WITH a new head coach and a shot of home grown talent coming up through the ranks, Treaty United women's side are looking to push on in 2025.

Sean Russell has taken over the helm from previous coach Dominic Foley, who helped the team finish in seventh place of the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division last year.

Russell has had plenty of experience coaching having spent last season with the WU17 side at Treaty. He was also involved as assistant coach to the senior women's side back in 2021.

Looking ahead to the new season newly appointed head coach Sean Russell said: “If you look at the season in a broader view we want to be really competitive on the pitch, we want to try to win every game.

“There is probably a lot of talk around the youth side of it as I was head coach of the U17 girls last season so I want to try and bring those players on and hopefully transition them into the world of senior soccer. There is huge potential in this team and it's my job to try and get the best out of the players.”

Treaty Utd women will hope their exciting underage stars, including the likes of Madison McGuane and Aibhlinn Cotter can step up and make up the difference with a number of departures during the closed season, which included a number of Canadian girls who have been with the side for a number of years.

Head coach Russell said: “I think a lot of the players that are not returning this season have done a fantastic service to the squad, it's just more so how we see the direction of the team going in the long term.

“We want to take the steps and put the plans in place to produce the incredible underage talent we have here at Treaty United and we need to make space for those players coming up. Of course there has to be a balance of producing players while also keeping some experience in the team so we are trying our best to find that balance at the moment.”

Treaty United women's side will get their SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division schedule underway on Saturday, March 8 in the Markets Field when they welcome Waterford FC to Limerick for the opening game of the 2025 season.
