The city’s St Patrick’s Day parade will commence on O’Connell Avenue at 12pm on Sunday
AN GARDA Siochána is anticipating large crowds in attendance at two events in Limerick city this St Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend.
The city’s St Patrick’s Day parade will commence on O’Connell Avenue at 12pm on Sunday, March 17.
The International Band Championship parade is due to be held on the streets of Limerick city on Monday, March 18. Parading bands will start at the junction of Harstonge St and The Crescent from 11:45am.
An Garda Síochana is advising those attending the events to pick an area along the route to view the parade ahead of time, arrive early, plan the journey into the city in advance, use public transport or Park and Ride facilities where possible, keep children under close supervision to avoid being accidentally separated in the crowd, pack sensibly and mind personal belongings, and follow the instructions of Gardaí and Stewards
To allow for both parades there will be road closures and traffic restrictions in place across the city centre from early morning on Sunday, March 17 and again on Monday morning, March 18.
These closures and restrictions will be managed by gardaí on a staggered basis depending on location.
Parking will not be permitted along the parade route between 4am and 4pm. Cars parked along it will be towed. Parking in any green areas in the city is also not allowed.
An Garda Síochána is also advising motorists and those who must commute into or through the city on Sunday and Monday to plan the journey in advance, follow all road signage, and adhere to the instructions of gardaí and stewards. If parking, park and lock your car in secure place where it is legal to do so and does not block access and to expect delays to bus services operating in and out of the city during the parade.
An Garda Síochána generally advise those heading out to socialise this St Patrick’s weekend to plan the night out - tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, carefully mind personal belongings, particularly in crowded areas or premises, drink alcohol responsibly, never drive under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol or drugs) and be mindful of driving the morning after. Don’t let any friend or family member walk home alone - there is safety in numbers and if you must walk home only walk in well-lit, populated areas and where you can be seen by traffic.
Speaking ahead of the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend, chief superintendent Derek Smart said: "People of all ages and backgrounds here in Limerick, residents and visitors to our city are set to enjoy the parade and festivities planned for this year’s St Patrick’s Day.
"In coordination with Limerick City and County Council and festival organisers, we will ensure that a full policing plan is in place and that those partaking in all the events around Limerick can experience one of the best weekends that this city has to offer.
"Gardaí will be on hand throughout to guarantee a safe and successful weekend for all and we are asking for assistance from the public in bringing this to fruition. Public consumption of alcohol is illegal and will not be tolerated, especially during the day.
"A comprehensive road traffic management plan will be in place in the city centre, designed to cause as little disruption as possible and we are looking forward to a smooth-running and enjoyable Bank Holiday weekend for everyone.
"Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona do gach duine ar fud na cathrach Luimnigh,” Mr Smart said.
