Diarmaid Byrnes training in St Francis Boxing Club
THE Limerick senior hurlers have turned to boxing as part of their pre-season training and as a fund-raising venture.
A Night of Boxing will take place on Saturday December 9 in the South Court Hotel.
There will be 10 fights between members of the senior hurling panel on the night – the bouts will consist of three two-minute rounds.
The boxing pairings will be finalised closer to the event.
“We are doing no hurling in November, it’s all boxing,” outlined Limerick senior hurling manager John Kiely.
The boxing training is taking place in St Francis Boxing Club under coach Ken Moore, who guided Andy Lee through the amateur ranks.
“The players are currently working very hard in the gym under the guidance of Joe O’Connor and our pitch sessions will commence in December,” said Kiely.
“The Limerick senior hurlers are striving to be the best prepared team that they can be requiring excellence in many areas including gym work, pitch sessions, diet, medical, video analysis and much more. In order to achieve excellence at the highest level, we need support,” said the Limerick manager, referencing the financial support needed for the Night of Boxing.
He added: “We are asking for support by way of sponsorship of each bout, each boxer and by way of advertising on the night.”
“2018 promises to be a very exciting campaign for our senior hurlers with the new championship format including four guaranteed matches in Munster, two at home to Tipperary and Waterford and two away to Cork and Clare.”
The new season will begin on Saturday December 30 with the start of the Munster Hurling League. The remaining games are likely to be played on Wednesday nights throughout January, ahead of the start of the Allianz Hurling League on Sunday January 28.
Tickets for the December 9 boxing cost €20 for adults and €10 for children. There is a €50 family ticket and ringside seats are €35. Tickets can be purchased on 061-335516.
There are a variety of sponsorship opportunities. Sponsoring a fight costs €2000, sponsoring a hurler/boxer costs €500 and general advertising is €200.
Proceeds from the boxing go to the senior hurling training fund.
