Limerick FC’s inevitable march towards the SSE Airtricity League First Division title reached its peak on Sunday night when they were crowned champions following a 3-2 win over UCD at the UCD Bowl in Belfield.
A UCD win – or a draw – would have kept the race alive (mathematically at least) with six games remaining but Limerick’s win means they are now 22 points clear of Drogheda and 24 clear of UCD.
Limerick were made to sweat when going behind in the first half but a John O’Flynn strike had it 1-1 at the break. Former UCD player Paul O’Conor put the Blues back in front in the second half before the students tied things up again only for O’Conor’s second to make it 3-2 with 13 minutes to play.
That’s how it stayed until the end as the final whistle triggered wild scenes of celebration from the visiting supporters. David Maher of Sportsfile was on hand to capture the images after the game.
