Callum Maycock earns AFC Wimbledon victory at struggling Port Vale

Substitute Callum Maycock scored AFC Wimbledon’s 88th-minute winner as bottom-of-the-table Port Vale’s League One relegation woes worsened with a 1-0 defeat at Vale Park.

Maycock’s first league goal of the season was the Londoners’ first shot on target.

Vale remain 10 points from safety and desperately need to blood experienced new striker Andre Gray as their lack of a cutting edge was again evident.

They have netted only 20 goals in 27 games, five of those in one match against Blackpool.

Vale managed two attempts on target, though headers from Ben Garrity and Connor Hall did not force Nathan Bishop into meaningful saves.

James Tilley fired into the side-netting during AFC Wimbledon’s first-half ascendancy and the visitors, winning at Vale Park for the first time since 2012, had penalty appeals rejected for tackles on Junior Nkeng and Zack Nelson.

Vale substitute George Hall was similarly disappointed in the second half while Brady was booked for protesting when his side failed to win a throw-in.
