Economics to stand as a stallion in India

Economics, winner of the Dante and Irish Champion Stakes in 2024, will stand as a stallion in India after being sold to Poonawalla Stud Farms.

Trained by William Haggas for Sheikh Isa Salman Al Khalifa, the Night Of Thunder colt was a tremendously impressive winner at York and while connections opted to miss the Derby, he confirmed his Group One class in victory at Leopardstown, beating Auguste Rodin by a neck.

His final outing at three was in the Champion Stakes at Ascot, where he was reported to have bled from the nose in finishing sixth. A setback meant his only start since then was in this year’s Champion Stakes, where he was eighth.

Bloodstock agent Ajay Anne told Thoroughbred Daily News: “Mr Zavaray Poonawalla has a big ambition of improving the breeding stock in India. They have been breeding horses for half a century and have stood some very good stallions and recently purchased Territories last year.

“This year, Mr Poonawalla was looking to buy a stallion from off the track, and Economics is one of the highest-profile horses that has gone to India in my memory.”

He added: “I think we are very lucky to get a stallion like him.”
