Will Grigg reflected on an emotional day as Chesterfield came from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw at home to Crawley in their first game since owner Phil Kirk died at the age of 59.
Two goals from Harry McKirdy gave the visitors a two-goal lead at the interval but Dylan Duffy and Armando Dobra scored in the second half to earn a point.
Grigg said: “I’m sure everybody had one thing on their mind at the start. Wonderful tribute for Phil Kirk. It was a really emotional moment before the game and then even five minutes into the game, you could feel the atmosphere in the stadium.
“I think that just shows what he meant to everyone at the club. He was a massive reason for me being here. He was an unbelievable guy, such a nice guy.
“It was a slow start. We want to play exciting football and free-flowing football but for the first 10 minutes maybe we need to spend it in the channels.
“We’ve got so much quality in the team, we can score in the blink of an eye. And I think the two goals came from that, a great individual bit of quality from Dylan Duffy and then a good team goal for ‘Dobs’.”
Crawley manager Scott Lindsey pointed to a lack of professionalism from some of his players.
Lindsey said: “I think we obviously got ourselves in a really good position and then we buckle in moments in the second half.
“We’re just not brave enough and strong enough to do our jobs properly. I think there are certain individuals out there today who are unprofessional in moments of the game that cost us.
“They get thrown in and one of the players lets their man just run off him and get a shot on goal.
“The second goal, we did a whole section in the meeting this morning at the hotel on how they like to either flash crosses across the face or they pull them back. And it’s so important that we mark our man in the box, yet we’re not marking in the box.
“We’re, at the moment, in my opinion, unprofessional to see a game through. I’m not accepting it and we’ve got to work harder as a group.”
After seeing Ade Adeyemo struck by a missile allegedly thrown from the home supporters, Lindsey added: “It’s unacceptable, really. So, yeah, shame on the person who threw the object that was thrown at Ade.
“Ade’s all right. He’s got a little cut, I think, on his head. So, yes, a disappointing moment in the game.”
