OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY:

Kerry District League 1 Limerick District League 1

LIMERICK District League made an early exit from the Oscar Traynor Trophy after playing out a 1-1 draw with the Kerry District League on Saturday evening.

Despite finishing the campaign unbeaten, John Lysaght and Paul Danaher’s side went out on goal difference, the Kerrymen beat Clare 3-1 while Limerick won 2-1 against the same opposition.

Kerry’s reward is a play off with the Waterford DL for the Munster title with the winner going on in the competition proper.
It was a harsh lesson for the youngest representative side Limerick DL have fielded in years but the experience will no doubt benefit these players for the coming campaigns.

Limerick were dealt a blow earlier with the withdrawal of Shane Duggan due to injury.

The Fairview player was the man of the match in the opening game versus Clare and his experience was lost. Another blow came when Limerick’s other ‘elder statesman’ Kieran O’Connell hobbled out of the action after 20 minutes which did not help the cause.

It was a tentative start for both sides with defences intent on making no early mistakes.
Limerick were first to threaten an opener when on 16 minutes Colm Walsh O’Loughlin gathered on the left and pulled the ball back for O’Connell whose first-time shot was inches wide of the mark.

The Regional supremo hobbled out of the action five minutes later with an ankle injury which will have his club sweating as they face some big FAI and MFA games in the coming month.

The home side showed they also possessed a threat midway through the opening half when Adam Ward picked out Tupimir Vrlsicak who let fly from 15 yards, but Limerick keeper Josh McCarthy produced a fine save to keep the game scoreless.

After the restart, Limerick were again first out of the traps as Danny O’Neill put Walsh O’Loughlin away on the left and his delivery to the back post was met by Adam Lipper who headed just off target.

Limerick took the lead after 63 minutes. Lipper picked out Walsh O’Loughlin and he cut inside his marker before being pulled down at the edge of the box. The Pike wide man took the free kick himself and scored a beauty into the top corner.
The visitors were still celebrating the opener when Kerry struck back 90 seconds later.

Cian Doe struck a shot from 25 yards into the bottom corner to tie the game.
With Limerick needing to win the game to progress they threw caution to the wind.

With ten minutes remaining Lipper again went within a whisker with a back post effort that sailed agonisingly over the top.
Limerick had a great chance to record the win when Eduardo Almeida cleared to Cian McNamara who played James Fitzgerald in on goal. To typify Limerick’s luck on the night, a cruel bobble just as the Balla man let fly, saw the ball fly over the top.

Disappointment in the end but Limerick gave it a good go and will have learned valuable experience. Colm Walsh O’Loughlin was Limerick’s star on the night with Almeida, Lipper and Fitzgerald also catching the eye.

LDL PREMIER LEAGUE:

Coonagh United 4 Charleville 2

THE epitome of a relegation ‘six pointer’ took place in Coonagh on Sunday morning when the hosts welcomed Charleville and after an exciting tussle secured three priceless points.

Sitting at the foot of the table, Coonagh could not afford to lose to the second from bottom Charleville and had the perfect start when Ger Myles’ opportunistic effort from 25 yards caught the Chris Kenny unawares in the Charleville goal and despite getting a hand to the shot was unable to keep it out.

Coonagh’s smile was wiped away three minutes later when the visitors were awarded a spot kick. However, a superb save by Josh Sheehan denied the lively Jack O’Callaghan an equaliser.

Coonagh made the escape count when they doubled their lead after 15 minutes. Five simultaneous corner kicks ended with Joey Sheehan heading in Sean Hartney’s delivery.

In the 41st minute, a speculative ball from Luke Doherty from inside his half saw Andrew Leyden break clear and he carried the ball 15 yards into the box and a smart finish into the corner to make it 3-0.

Straight from the kick-off, Charleville showed they were not done as O’Callaghan reduced the deficit by half time.
When the visitors made it a one goal game on 54 minutes courtesy of Sean McCormack the game was back in the melting pot.

With Charleville pushing for an equaliser Coonagh withheld the pressure and in the dying minutes good work by Ger Myles presented the chance for Oussama Sadoudi to secure the win for the home side.

Murroe 1 Corbally Utd 3
