Donoughmore National School is a mixed primary school on the outskirts of Limerick City (4km) dotted between Dooradoyle and Castletroy, Eircode - V94X051. Our spacious school, situated in the countryside, is surrounded by green fields and hedgerows.
We pride ourselves on being a very inclusive school. There are 8 classes in the school from Junior Infants – 6th Class along with our Special Autism Class, a new development of which we are so proud. The intention is to open a 2nd Special Class in September 2024.
A new addition to our school from September 2024 is childcare – a before and after school club which will cater for the needs of our pupils and their parents in providing care for the children either side of the school day. This service will be run in the school by independent private providers.
We, in Donoughmore NS are very privileged to have a very caring and dedicated staff, from our Principal, our 7 mainstream class teachers, our 5 Special Educational teachers, our Special Class teacher, our 7 SNAs, our secretary and caretaker. Our whole school team works in partnership with our parents, the Parent Teacher Association and the Board of Management to provide enriched learning opportunities and experiences for all our pupils.
Four of our past pupils are worthy recipients of the JP McManus Scholarship Awards, an achievement we are very proud of, given these pupils started their formal educational journey with us in Donoughmore NS.
As our Mission Statement outlines,
Donoughmore National School:
Along with following the Curriculum, as set out by the Department of Education, the pupils of Donoughmore NS are exposed and participate in many extra-curricular activities.
School Choir: Our school choir participates in many choral occasions from Peace Proms to Culture Night to Christmas carols and perform for many special occasions at school and in the local church for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Our choir is led by very talented teachers.
Music Generation will be providing Ukulele lessons from February 2024 to the pupils from 3rd-6th class. An opportunity for every pupil in those classes to learn an instrument. This ties in nicely with our after-school tin whistle lessons, every Monday.
Analog Robotics: The pupils have participated for a number of years in the Analog Robotics Competition held each year. This is preceded by a LEGO workshop, where a school team is chosen to represent the school. The children were given the task of building a functioning arm. They had to follow directions and code their device to pick up different items, all from Lego! We also recently received a community award from Analog Devices.
STEAM: Mary Immaculate College – Our school are very fortunate to be linked with Mary Immaculate College and have worked closely with the Art Department and their final year students to work on the visualisation of data. It was such a fabulous way of expressing the shared emotions that both sets of students shared and an opportunity to develop links with our wider school community using Visual Art.
Our school is part of the Creative Schools programme and this allows our committee of pupils to develop and lead creative projects throughout the school guided by our talented teachers. Earlier this year we hosted an Art Exhibition displaying a piece of artwork from each pupil in our school and invited our neighbours from the local community.
Gardening Competitions: We are proud winners of the Woodies Budding Gardeners Senior Cycle Class of 2023 in their sow it, grow it, show it competition, where each pupil of 4th class was head gardener for a day and guided by our teachers and SNAs.
Our school participates in Food Dudes each year. The programme provides and introduces free fruit and vegetables to all the pupils for a short period of time and has been proven to increase children’s consumption of fruit and vegetables in the long term. This is led by our wonderful 3rd class teacher.
In addition to this, our school will be providing Free Hot School Meals from April 2024 for every pupil in our school.
Sports activities are central to school life in Donoughmore NS. Our pupils participate in soccer– FAI quarter finalists 2023 both girls and boys - athletics, swimming, indoor hurling, Gaelic football and rugby. Wellbeing and positive mental health are core values in Donoughmore NS and we use the Friends for Life programme in our school.
