An organisation founded and led by scientists - over the past 35 years, Regeneron has become renowned for following the science to find solutions to insurmountable problems in human health.
Regeneron came to Limerick in 2014 and the biotech leader is now the biggest employer in the mid-west region.
STEM outreach is a critical element of the company’s commitment to giving back, and to mark Science Week 2023 Regeneron has supported a number of initiatives that will spark an enthusiasm and a passion for all things STEM in a wide and diverse range of students, across all sectors of the community.
“We are committed to igniting a passion for STEM subjects in students of all ages, they will be our scientists of the next generation. Through our many initiatives that support STEM outreach in the community we hope to help sculpt a future where curiosity knows no bounds” said Niall O’Leary, Senior Vice President and Site Lead IOPS Raheen, Limerick.
Throughout the academic year the Regeneron STEM Academy is delivered on a weekly basis at Thomond Community College. To compliment this initiative, and to mark Science Week 2023, a hugely successful STEM Expo was delivered where over 100 students got hands on experience and even got to explore all the possibilities that virtual reality (VR) technology encapsulates.
Science events like this are critically important in helping students make astute subject choices for their senior cycle, while at the same time steering them to consider the many career opportunities that exist in the whole STEM sphere.
Regeneron employees assembled over 1000 STEM kits which were given to 10 schools across the region.
They also collaborated with Learning Hub Limerick to run their first STEM camps, educational events that were open to both primary and post-primary school students.
All year-round Regeneron partners with Junior Achievement Ireland to deliver content to students of all ages, where again the objective is to encourage a mindset of curiosity and to foster an enthusiasm in STEM subjects.
Over the past six years Regeneron staff, through the JAI programme, have engaged with over 2,500 students. The tailored programme fosters a real appreciation for science and indeed brings it to life in a very fun way.
This commitment to encouraging and shaping our scientists of the future is further demonstrated through the company’s sponsorship of SciFest Regional Fairs and sending winners to the ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.
Through these many initiatives it is envisaged that Regeneron will encourage and nurture the scientists of the future, which is necessary if we are to continue finding cures for serious diseases.
