PICTURES: Historic Limerick home for sale again after being sold in 2024 on High Court instructions

Bohergar House and 36 acres is being guided at €900,000 by GVM Auctioneers

A PERIOD residence and 36 acres in Boher that was sold in September 2024 on the instructions of the Examiner of the High Court is for sale again.

Bohergar House has been brought to the market by GVM’s Tom Crosse with a guide of €900,000.

The new owners will write their own chapter in the property’s storied history. It was originally owned by the Wilkinson family in the early to mid 19th century. They were related to the famous James Napper Tandy, an Irish revolutionary and a founder of the United Irishmen.

Bohergar was purchased by James Humphrys in 1856 for £900 from George Wilkinson. It stayed in the Humphry family for over a century.

Built in the 1930s to replace the original Bohergar House, it is an imposing period house, full of character and boasting many period features including granite sills and door surrounds, elaborate wrought iron balustrade, wooden panelling, coving and cornicing, antique marble fire surrounds and stained glass rooflights to name but a few.

The property has since been sold out of Humphry family and they were not the owners when it was put up for auction on the instructions of the Examiner of the High Court last year. It was bought at the time but the purchasers have now  decided to put it back on the market.

Mr Crosse, property director at GVM Auctioneers, said it is a lovely period home that has been left go and neglected over a number of years unfortunately and the condition reflects that.

“It does need some love and care. An empathetic buyer with a passion for older houses could restore it to its former glory. It would be a wonderful project in a very classy and affluent location,” said Mr Crosse.

Even though it is new to the market, he says there is good interest already.

“There is interest locally and I have had a couple of calls from overseas - from America,” said Mr Crosse.

Another selling point is the 36 acres of rolling parkland. Coincidentally, Mr Crosse has a further 14.5 acres for sale, adjoining the land, for a different vendor.

“It would be an ideal opportunity for a purchase interested in hobby farming or equestrianism.

The main house at Bohergar is a substantial period residence, extending to  2900 sq ft/ 269 sq m of accommodation, laid out over two floors and comprising and impressive entrance hall, three sizeable reception rooms, a farmhouse style kitchen, a pantry /scullery and four bedrooms, three of which are ensuite, plus the main bathroom.

Several outbuildings form the courtyard located to the rear of the house which is accessed through a cut stone arch with weathervane atop.

The walled stable yard comprises several outbuildings including six stables, three storehouses, a large workshop and a two bedroom house, also in need of repair. A tarmacadam tennis court is also in need of refurbishment.
