Women’s Collective host event on making politics accessible

Women’s Collective Ireland - Limerick will hold an event in the city centre next month

WOMEN'S Collective Ireland - Limerick will host an event that aims to make politics more accessible and understandable to everyday women next month.

The event, Making Sense of Political Nonsense, which is part of the Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival, will include speakers with expertise and insight in how local and national government works and what it all entails. It will be a safe and accessible space for women to ask any questions they have on the topic. From, What is a Ceann Comhairle? to What services do local councils provide? There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Yvie Murphy, Women’s Collective Ireland - Limerick Coordinator, said:

“When we come across politics being discussed on the TV, newspapers or radio, it is always assumed that people have a certain base level of knowledge, but what if someone doesn’t? If I turn on the radio and don’t understand what people are talking about, I am not going to listen. I will most likely turn it off and not engage.”

She continued: “We work with women all the time who would like to know more about how our political system works and how they can engage in it but have no idea where to start gaining that information. That is what our event is about.”

The event will include presentations from three guest speakers, one focusing on the Local Council, one on National Government and the other on how to navigate the Irish political system from a migrant perspective.

Making Sense of Political Nonsense takes place on Wednesday, April 9 from 10am to 12.30pm in the Absolute Hotel in the city centre. This is a free event but places are limited and must be booked in advance. To book your place contact Women’s Collective Ireland - Limerick on 087-3283746 or email limerick@womenscollective.ie.
