Extension on Limerick Greenway thrown into doubt over funding issue

THE PROPOSED extension of the Limerick Greenway into the city centre has been thrown into doubt.

It comes after Limerick City and County Council confirmed the funding for the project is under review.

The local authority added: “The 2026 funding from the Department of Transport is currently unknown and the indications are that funding for greenways in 2026 will be limited”.

The information came to light at this month’s metropolitan meeting, following a question by Patrickswell councillor Dan McSweeney, Fine Gael.

Tim Fitzgerald, a senior engineer at the Mid-West national roads design officer, wrote: “This is a very disappointing development. However, Limerick City and County Council are in a position to keep the procurement process open until the end of 2025 and we will continue to liaise with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the mayor’s office in an effort to secure funding to facilitate an award of contract prior to the tender acceptance period expiring.”

Cllr McSweeney said the news is “extremely disappointing” and accused TII of being “short-sighted” to not approve consultants for it.

“The proposed extension from Rathkeale to Limerick city was building on the success of the existing Limerick Greenway and would have had significant benefit for Patrickswell and the wider Limerick City West area,” he added.
