Winners of the inaugural Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh Sports Quiz advance to All-Ireland final

THE INAUGURAL Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh Sports Quiz took place in St Paul’s NS, Dooradoyle and featured many budding Jimmy Magees. Twenty one teams took part and, after eight rounds of eight questions, the team from St Paul’s were top of the class, having answered 48 questions.

Two schools, Raheenagh NS and Herbertstown NS, finished on 46 points and, after three play-off questions, it was the team from Herbertstown NS that achieved second place. Quizmaster Ciarán Crowe posed many challenging questions but the children displayed a remarkable knowledge of all sports.

“This is the first year of this latest addition to the Cumann na mBunscol calendar,” said Joe Lyons, who is cathaoirleach of Cumann na mBunscol in Limerick.

“The reaction from children and pupils has been overwhelmingly positive. Fifty per cent of the questions were on Gaelic Games while the remainder ranged through baseball, basketball, American football, rugby and Olympic Games. The children from all schools were superb and they had a great time!”

Mr English, who teaches in Knockainery NS, presented the teams with their prizes, and assisted treasurer John Tuohy and Michael O’Sullivan with correcting the answer sheets.

Former Limerick footballer Paula Donnelly, Ruairi Walsh and Niamh O’Dea, who are all teaching in St Paul’s, decorated the hall beautifully for the occasion.

The victorious team, coached by their teachers Ruairi Walsh and Niamh O’Dea, advance to the All-Ireland final in Tullamore on March 23.
