Limerick's Paul Kennedy after winning his M40-44 Category at the World Cycling Championships in Denmark
LIMERICK man Paul Kennedy has added the M40-44 Category World Championship cycling title to his trophy cabinet after winning at the Gran Fondo World Championships in Denmark.
A top tester on the home scene, who has medaled previously at the Gran Fondo Worlds, Kennedy was best in a 65-rider field featuring riders from around the globe, winning in a blistering average speed and by the smallest of margins.
The Limerick man was just one second up on Reidar Borgersen of Norway, with Kennedy averaging 48.41km per hour around the 33.13km course, clocking a time of 41:03.
This win hasn't come out of thin air after the Adare man placed second in the men's 40 category time trial in the World Road Race Championships which took place in Glasgow.
It wasn't always cycling though as his new found love for the sport came later on in life.
Paul began his sporting career with Adare GAA, playing through all underage levels winning numerous country titles over the years including minor, U21 and senior.
The Adare man retired from hurling at the age of 37 and turned to cycling to keep the mind and body fit.
While beginning to get more into cycling Paul met Dan Cahill from Newcastle West Cycling Club who encouraged him to try some race specific training session with the club before competing in his first race in 2016.
