Man charged with ‘provocative act’ during protest outside court

A man has been charged with doing a provocative act during a protest outside the courts in Belfast.

The 20-year-old has also been charged with disorderly behaviour during the protest on Tuesday afternoon, police have said.

It follows rival protests in the capital amid a controversy over the flying of a Palestinian flag from Belfast City Hall earlier this week.

The 20-year-old man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man arrested on Tuesday in relation to a protest in Belfast city centre on December 8 was charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and selling an offensive weapon.

He was due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

Police said they have also charged an 18-year-old man and a 46-year-old man following a second protest in the Belfast City Hall area on Tuesday evening.

They have both been charged with disorderly behaviour and are due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

As is the usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
