New campaign launched to get members of Traveller community to vote in Limerick

A NEW campaign to get members of the Traveller community out to vote in Limerick has been launched.
The Limerick Traveller Network have set the scheme in motion.
It has had input from residents of Traveller sites and houses across the city.
The network’s aim is to see change in the areas of Traveller accommodation, education and to see an end to discrimination.
Although the Traveller community represent just under one percent of the Irish population, they often do not have their say when it comes to elections.

Olive O’Reilly of the Limerick Traveller Network has joined a team of volunteers in getting out to communities, getting people registered to vote, and ensuring they are engaged in the democratic process. It came ahead of the deadline to register to vote this week
“Every Traveller has the right to vote. We are delivering voter application forms to encourage our community to register to vote so they can have their voice heard. In voting we are letting the politicians know that we intend to use our voice to create change,” said Ms O’Reilly.
“If you are from the Traveller community and you want to change the way things are - the terrible conditions, the discrimination, poor health, high unemployment and bad accommodation - ensure to vote,” she added.
