'Delighted': Independent candidate first to secure council backing for presidential vote

Gareth Sheridan has received his first local authority nomination in the race for the Presidency, after Kerry County Council voted to back him as a candidate this morning.

In a video posted across Sheridan's social media he said "I am very happy that I've received a nomination from Kerry county council to contest the upcoming presidential election". The businessman and entrepreneur described "having the support of the kingdom and the trust of the councillors means a lot and is a real boost from my campaign.

Sheridan '35' now requires the support of three more local authorities to secure a place on the ballot for the Presidential Election on October 24.

This nomination comes less than 12 hours after Conor McGregor announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

Councillors heard from 14 prospective candidates at a special meeting of the council last week. At today’s monthly meeting, members agreed by majority to make a nomination rather than abstain from the process.

Independent councillor Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan proposed Sheridan’s candidacy, which was seconded by fellow Independent councillor Martin Grady. As no other names were put forward, Sheridan was deemed to have received the nomination.

The contest to succeed President Michael D. Higgins will be to intensifying in the coming weeks, as candidates seek support from councils and Oireachtas members.
