RIP: GAA club pays tribute to ‘absolute gentleman’ Garda Kevin Flatley after tragic death

Tributes have been pouring in following the tragic death of Garda Kevin Flatley, who was killed while on duty in Dublin on Sunday.

The 49-year-old father-of-two was struck by a motorcycle while carrying out a speed checkpoint on the R132 at Lanestown near Lusk on Sunday afternoon. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A motorcyclist in his 30s was also critically injured and remains in hospital.

Garda Flatley, who had served in An Garda Síochána for 26 years, was remembered by his local GAA club, O’Dwyers GAA in Balbriggan, as an “absolute gentleman” who gave selflessly to his community and club.

In a heartfelt tribute posted to Facebook, the club said: “Kevin, a valued member of An Garda Síochána sadly passed away following an incident that occurred whilst on duty.

“Kevin was an absolute gentleman who had a huge part to play in our club, always lending a hand when he could. He was always a pleasure to chat to, and his grá for GAA and helping others shone through in every conversation.

“He was a dedicated coach with our U10 girls team, encouraging the players at all times and bringing great energy.”

The club extended its condolences to Kevin’s wife Úna and their daughters Aoife and Erin, both of whom play with O’Dwyers GAA.

“He will be sorely missed by all. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Condolences have also been shared widely across the local community.

Balbriggan FC said: “Heartfelt condolences to the family of Garda Kevin Flatley, his colleagues, and everyone at O’Dwyers GAA from Balbriggan FC. May he Rest In Peace.”

Another mourner added: “An absolute gentleman. He will be sorely missed by us all in the club. Thinking of Úna, Aoife, Erin and his family, friends and colleagues this very tough time.”

A neighbour remembered him as “a lovely man and neighbour to us for many years… thinking of Úna and the girls at this difficult time. Sending all our love.”

Garda Flatley had been a member of the Roads Policing Unit since 2018 and was widely respected among his colleagues.

The married father-of-two was the 90th officer to die on duty since the creation of the force in 1922. He is survived by his wife, Úna, and daughters, Aoife and Erin.

Gardai have appealed to anyone who saw the Yamaha R motorcycle involved in the crash from 12pm on Sunday onwards to contact investigators and aid their inquiries.

An appeal for witnesses and those with relevant dashcam or video footage has also been made.
