Irish police officer killed after being hit by a motorbike at Dublin checkpoint

An Irish police officer has been killed after being struck by a motorbike at a checkpoint in north Dublin.

The incident took place shortly before 1pm on Sunday on the R132 at Lanestown.

An Garda Siochana said the motorcycle struck a 49-year-old garda who is a member of the Roads Policing Unit.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 30s, was transported by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious.

The area has been preserved for forensic and technical examination, with traffic diversions currently in place.

The local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
