Man dies following assault in Co Cork

A man aged in his 30s has died after he was assaulted in Co Cork, gardai have said.

The incident happened shortly before 10pm on Monday night in Youghal.

Gardai and emergency services were alerted to the assault at commercial premises on North Main Street.

The victim was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

A man, aged in his 20s, has since been arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Cork.

A number of scenes are being preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Midleton Garda Station.

Gardai said a family liaison officer will be assigned to support the family of the victim.

Investigating gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
