'One of the best' - Tributes pour in following death of iconic GAA commentator Brendan Cummins

The legendary GAA broadcaster and match commentator Brendan Cummins sadly passed away following a short illness on Friday, 7 March. 

Tributes have poured in across the country since the news of the 76-year-old's death. Brendan was an iconic GAA figure in his home county of Meath and especially in his local area of Dunsany, having being inducted to the Meath GAA Hall of Fame in 2020.

Brendan's face and voice was familiar to sports fans across the country through his commentaries on LMFM Radio over the past 20 years and his years spent playing county for Meath with the minor team that reached the Leinster semi-final in 1996. 

The Dunsany man has commentated on thousands of club matches in Meath throughout the years, including the 2021 and 2022 campaigns that saw the Meath Ladies' team win the historic back-to-back All-Ireland titles.

Alongside his passion for GAA, Brendan had a major interest in horse racing while working as a sports journalist. 

Hundreds of tributes have been made following the sports legend's death, with the likes of Marty Morrissey leading some of the kind tributes to the Meath man.

Morrissey said on X: "Very sad to hear today of the passing of former Meath PRO Brendan Cummins. He was often beside me in the Commentary Box as he broadcast a match for LMFM, commentating on Meath v Cavan with Mattie Kerrigan recently. A gentleman. RIP Brendan."

Fellow LMFM Radio presenter Colm Corrigan also shared on social media: "We were work and sporting comrades for over 30 years. Proud to call Brendan Cummins a dear colleague and friend. His depth of knowledge of @MeathGAA will never be surpassed and what a superb commentator he was. One of the very best. Sleep easy my friend."

His local club Dunsany GAA also led tributes to the "devoted clubman," saying: "His passing leaves a void in his family, club & community."
