ALERT: Irish branded cheese removed from supermarket shelves amid 'do not eat' warning

Batches of Horgans Irish Smoked Cheddar have been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) due to concerns over the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The FSAI have said that retailers have been requested to remove any implicated batches from sale and display. The effected batches include Horgans Irish Smoked Cheddar 150g with a use by date of 25 May 2025. The approval number is IE 1089 EC.

People have been warned to not eat any of the impacted products as Listeria monocytogenes infections can cause severe health issues. The symptoms of the infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea as well as mild flu-like symptoms.

The FSAI have advised that some people are more vulnerable to this form of bacteria such as pregnant women, babies and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly.

They also added that the time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing is on average 3 weeks but it can range between 3 and 70 days

Wholesalers and distributors have been requested to contact any customers who may have purchased the cheese.
