ESB set out safety warning of item that can 'pose serious risks' amid power outages

ESB issue a safety message for standby generators

A safety message has been issued by ESB Ireland about standby generators which can pose serious risks if not used properly.

"Have you purchased a generator for your home? If so you must have a changeover switch installed by a registered electrical contractor," ESB advised.

"Never plug your generator directly into your house circuit," ESB warned. "This causes back-feeding and could cause serious injury to you, your neighbours or others."

"Your generator must be covered from rain for your safety. Don't touch it with wet hands," ESB continued.

"Please keep generators outdoors and follow manufacturer's guidelines. Never use generators indoors or in enclosed spaces," ESB said.

Always remember to stay safe and stay clear of fallen electricity wires, ESB warns.
