Are supermarkets closed during Storm Éowyn? Latest from Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, SuperValu, and Dunnes Stores

Most major supermarket chains will be impacted by the status red wind warnings, which Met Éireann says represent a potential 'danger to life'

With Storm Éowyn set to blast Ireland through the night, multiple businesses, schools, and now, supermarkets, have announced their closures, and plans for later opening hours.

Most major supermarket chains are to be effected by the Status Red wind warning, put in place by Met Éireann, who have issued statements declaring that it is a "danger to life."

Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, and SuperValu have have confirmed their plans ahead of the storm, which is to begin in the early hours of Friday morning.

A representative for Tesco Ireland said, "To ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers, Tesco stores will be closed for the duration of the Storm Éowyn red weather warnings, and will reopen when its safe to do so,

"This usually happens about an hour after the red weather warning has lifted, which will be at different times depending on the county you live in. We will be keeping customers updated through our social media channels," she added.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Lidl Ireland, and Northern Ireland, stated, “In line with current guidance from Met Éireann, all Lidl Ireland and Lidl Northern Ireland stores will close on Friday, January 24, during any red weather warning that is in place. It is planned that stores will reopen one hour after weather warnings have lifted in local areas, if safe to do so and guided by latest safety information,

"Reopening times will therefore differ per county and customers are advised to check the latest weather warning information for their local area. As this situation continues to evolve, the safety of our colleagues and customers is of utmost importance and we will continue to monitor the changing situation closely," they concluded.

Aldi Ireland also took to their social media to announce their closure, saying, "We will reopen only when it is deemed safe to do so. We will keep you updated. Stay safe."

However, SuperValu has reassured customers that they are prepared for the dreaded storm, but encourage their customers to check their local stores' social media channels, adding, "We're committed to supporting our communities through this."

Dunnes Stores has yet to officially confirm whether its stores will open as normal or not.

However, it is understood that a number of its stores across the country will not open until after the status red warnings have been lifted.
