An investigation is underway after an elderly woman died in a fatal road traffic incident in County Carlow this Friday night.

In an appeal for witnesses, they say the incident occurred on the N80 in the townland of Rathcrogue at approximately 6.30pm.

"A car collided with a female pedestrian on the N80. The female pedestrian, aged in her 70s was fatally injured as a result of the collision," said a garda spokesperson

The woman's body has been removed from the scene and has been taken to the Mortuary in University Hospital Waterford where a post mortem will take place in due course.

According to gardai, the male driver, aged in his 20s, of the car was uninjured.

The N80 in the townland of Rathcrogue, Carlow is currently closed and will remain closed overnight as a  technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will take place in the morning. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward and they are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available.
