'Pathetic' - Senator slams Mary Lou McDonald's comment after England's Euro 2024 loss
The Sinn Féin leader posted a number of tweets seemingly celebrating Spain's victory over England in Berlin
A Green Party Senator labelled comments made by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald during the Euro 2024 final as "pathetic" on Sunday evening.
Offaly-based senator Pippa Hackett was responding after Mary Lou posted "Olé, Olé, Olé" and a message of congratulations in response to Spain's win over England in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin.
Hackett, who last week lost out in the Green Party leadership race, posted: "This is pathetic. At a time when we need leaders to build bridges."
Many Irish fans jokingly donned Spanish jerseys and supported our continental cousins over our near neighbours on Sunday.
There was a huge reaction to Pippa's post on X, including from another Sinn Féin TD Réada Cronin who said she was "morto" for the Offaly politician.
Others questioned why Mary Lou couldn't choose to support Spain, while a third commented: "It’s call banter, even my English friends understand that. They would give it back in spades if they won. Don’t take life so seriously."
Others pointed out that "it's a bit of craic" between neighbours.
