Rifle and silencer seized during garda searches targeting Galway crime gang

The suspected rifle has been sent for ballistics analysis

A man has been arrested following the seizure of a suspected rifle and other paraphernalia during a search operation in County Galway.

Gardai have confirmed the operation, which commenced shortly after 7am this Saturday at a residence in Turloughmore, was part of ongoing investigations into criminal activity in the Galway area.

A number of garda units were involved including the Galway Divisional Detective Unit, the Galway County Crime Unit, the Garda Armed Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit.

"During the course of a full search of the house and the grounds of the residence, a suspected rifle along with a silencer and scope were seized by gardaí. The seized firearm will be sent to the Garda Ballistics Unit for analysis," said a spokesperson.

A man, aged in his 20s, who was arrested in connection with seizure, has since been charged and is due to be brought before a special court sitting this Saturday evening.

Investigations are ongoing.
