Torrential rain brings 'risk of flooding' but hope on the horizon for busy Bank Holiday Weekend

As the week unfolds, residents across the South and South-West regions are bracing themselves for heavy rainfall and the threat of flooding.

According to Carlow Weather, forecasts indicate that the rain will persist this Wednesday, with intermittent downpours expected to continue into this Thursday.

A statement by the local meteorologist on X warns: "A wet night out there and plenty more rain to come overnight, heavy showers tomorrow also with risk of flooding in parts of the South and South-West."

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Despite the inclement weather, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Friday promises a respite from the deluge, with clearer skies and more favorable conditions anticipated across the affected regions. However, the reprieve may be short-lived, as Saturday is forecasted to bring another round of showery weather.

Looking ahead to Sunday, the outlook appears more promising, with sunny spells forecasted to break through the clouds and scattered showers expected.

Met Éireann reports a possibility of flooding this Wednesday night, but adds: "It looks set to start mostly cloudy and damp on Friday with scattered patches of rain, drizzle and mist. However, drier and brighter weather will extend from the west through the late morning and afternoon. A fine and mostly sunny late afternoon and evening is expected nationwide."

As for Saturday, they report: "Rain will extend nationwide on Saturday morning accompanied by freshening southeasterly winds. The rain will clear to the northeast in the evening but showers will follow from the Atlantic."

While according to the office, Sunday indicates: "Mist and low cloud is expected to clear on Sunday to leave a day of sunny spells and scattered showers. However, there is the chance of a spell of persistent rain developing in the southwest later."
