Garda patrol and emergency services attended the fire which occurred near a local church

A chimney fire in a house close to a town church has claimed the life of one local elderly woman.

The fire happened in Holy Family Parish Church in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, this Monday afternoon, March 11.

It is understood that the local woman, in her 80's, was overcome by smoke fumes and the best efforts of the emergency services failed to resuscitate her.

The local fire brigade team, ambulance services and gardaí attended the scene as neighbours also lent assistance.

It is understood that the woman was a member of a well known family from the parish of Kiltimagh.

“She had resided here in town for a good many years and loved being so close to the church and the town. She was a gentle and kind lady and we are all in shock with the suddenness of this sad news,” said a neighbour.
