The late Joe Shannon passed away after lengthy cancer battle

Joe Shannon passed away from a lengthy battle with cancer this Monday, March 4.

Surrounded by his family in the loving care of the staff at North West Hospice, The Mall, Sligo, Mr Shannon battled a long-term illness for many years.

Mr Shannon was a popular TV chef often featuring on cookery slots on Virgin Media's Ireland AM and presented a morning radio show on Ocean FM with fellow Sligo native and musician, Georgie Gorman.

A leading chef at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sligo, many people have left loving tributes and condolences for the late Mr Shannon, known widely as a ‘wonderful character’. 

One former colleague said: “No matter how busy your kitchens ever were, you always looked after your staff and your team. You were never too busy to crack a joke or belt out a few verses of songs only you knew!

You were generous on every front, with good causes, with your time, your humour and your portion size!”

While another person said: “My heartfelt condolences to Marie, Orla, Emer and Joseph. I am deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing - He was such a warm and genuine soul, and I feel privileged to have known him during our time together at TV3 and Ireland AM. 

“Joe's kindness and sense of humour always brought light to the studio.”

Mr Shannon’s funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife and family, brother Michael, sisters Elizabeth, Bernadette and Dolores, sons-in-law,  grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
