ONE of the music industry’s biggest event will return and continue its principal role in championing Irish music – and seven Limerick names are part of their comprehensive list of 2022 albums.
To celebrate the best in Irish recorded music, The RTÉ Choice Music Prize has become one of the music industry’s highlights of the year, since its inception in 2005.
So far this year, the following seven Limerick artists and bands are eligible for the prize:
Limerick rapper Willzee for Kurti Gris, Sinead O’Brien for Time Bend and Break The Bower, Dylan Flynn and the Dead Poets for their EP ‘crazy how we live like this’, Pity of The Sea for their debut album ‘Incessant’, Goitse for their album “Rose”, as well as Martian Subculture for his album ‘BANK PROLOGUE.’
3 On The Bund, who formed their group after meeting in the University of Limerick’s prestigious Irish World Academy, are also on the list for their album ‘Frenzy.’
Key dates for this year’s The RTÉ Choice Music Prize were announced on the Tracy Clifford Show. The live event will take place on March 9 in Dublin, as well as celebrated with an exclusive live broadcast on RTÉ 2FM - along with a TV-special on RTÉ2 later that month.
Three new prizes have also been announced – Irish Artist of the Year, Irish Breakthrough Artist and Classic Irish Album.
Head of RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy said this year has been another year of incredible music and performances from Irish artists and musicians, which they have continued to celebrate across 2FM.
“We are looking forward to giving all this year’s RTÉ Choice Music Prize shortlisted songs and artists the support they truly deserve and to getting behind the three new categories, which will make a welcome addition to this important celebration of the very best in Irish music”, he added.
Last year, the winners were Dermot Kennedy for his song “Better Days”, and For Those I Love for their album of the same name.
