THE Mayor of the city and county of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley, has written a special Limerick to mark Munster Rugby's victory in the URC Grand Final.
Ahead of the homecoming celebrations at Thomond Park on Monday, Cllr Francis Foley, along with Council Chief Executive Dr. Pat Daly, welcomed members of the Munster Rugby squad and management to City Hall to mark the squad's victory.
The event, held in the Council Chamber, saw the Mayor honour Munster Rugby’s first league victory since 2011, along with fellow councillors, senators and Minister Kieran O’Donnell.
Presentations were made on the night to Munster Rugby CEO Ian Flanagan, head coach Graham Rowntree and to Fineen Wycherley as a player representative.
Commenting afterwards, Cllr Foley, said: “The scenes at the final whistle will live long in the memory as Munster’s “brave and faithful” entered the lion's den, only to come away with the spoils. Proving that ‘nothing is impossible’.
“At times like these, I always like to reference the clubs and schools coaches who instilled those basic skills and love for the game into the players. As you all know, Limerick is synonymous with rugby and its passion for the game knows no bounds.

“Our most famous rugby sons and daughters have delivered on the local, national and international stage for decades. Saturday was no different as Limerick’s own Calvin Nash, Conor Murray, Craig Casey and Keith Earls were all involved in the win.”
Other players the Mayor mentioned included Mike Prendergast, George Murray and Ian Costello in the coaching box, while he said “we are lucky” that Munster Rugby calls Limerick its home and concluded by saying “who knows what the future holds for these players”.
To finish proceedings at City Hall, Mayor Foley read a special Limerick which he penned to mark the occasion.
There once was a coach named Rowntree,
For Munster, he crossed the Irish sea,
He trained them with might,
To win the URC fight,
And brought the trophy home with great glee!
