Limerick gardai catch motorist driving at Formula 1 speeds

The motorist was arrested and charged with dangerous driving after reaching a speed of 195km/h on the M20 Limerick to Cork motorway
A MOTORIST thought they were driving on the Formula 1 circuit Monza and not the M20 Limerick to Cork motorway on Tuesday.
Gardai clocked the driver of a jeep travelling at almost 200km/h in a 120km/h zone on a section of the M20, heading from Adare towards the city.
A post on An Garda Siochana Limerick’s Instagram page reads: “195km/h in a 120km/h zone… that’s not ‘making good time’, that’s making a court date.”
Gardai said the driver was stopped by the Roads Policing Unit in Limerick on Tuesday evening after travelling at almost 200km/h.
“A Fixed Charge Notice wasn’t appropriate in this case - the driver was arrested and will now appear before the courts charged with dangerous driving.
“If you’re in that much of a hurry, you’re already too late. Slow down and help keep our roads safe,” concludes the post on Limerick gardai’s social media feed.
A day earlier, on bank holiday Monday, local gardai clocked a motorist driving at 147km/h while overtaking a line of traffic on a wet M20 near Dooradoyle.
Upon stopping the vehicle, they also discovered one of the tyres was under inflated. Fixed charge notices were issued.
A Garda Roads Policing Operation took place throughout the August bank holiday weekend from Thursday, July 30 to Tuesday, August 4.
A garda spokesperson said after five days of the operation, there were two fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on our roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 110.
“Throughout the weekend's Roads Policing Operation, gardaí conducted both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
“To date, a total of 169 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).
“Just over 4,400 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first five days of the operation,” said the garda spokesperson.
During the first five days, just over 370 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
The garda spokesperson said the weekend's road safety enforcement operation focused on the four lifesaver offences in an effort to ensure that all road users get home safe - speeding, driving under the influence of an intoxicant, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt.
“Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and stick to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving. You can help get another person home safe,” concluded the garda spokesperson.
