‘Luck of God someone hasn’t been killed’ – Calls for traffic calming at Limerick soccer pitch

URGENT calls are being made for traffic calming measures at a busy Limerick soccer club as a councillor warned it is the “luck of God someone hasn’t been killed there.”

Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin tabled a motion calling on the council to carry out immediate traffic calming measures at Abbeyfeale United Soccer Club.

Speaking at the April meeting of the Newcastle West Municipal District, Cllr Galvin said explained a woman was recently “rear-ended” while exiting the car park following her child’s training session at the club.

He said the woman’s car was “wrote off”, while the other vehicle had minimal damage, adding that it was “the luck of God that someone hasn’t been killed there.”

Cllr Galvin said the pedestrian crossing also poses a risk, noting there “could be better signage” on the approach, with cars often having to brake suddenly to avoid children and parents crossing.

He added that a “speed ramp on both approaches” would improve safety at the club, stressing that it must be a “focal point as we are dealing with children.”

The motion was seconded by councillor Francis Foley.

In a written reply, Senior Executive Engineer Ben Noonan said the installation of ramps and other traffic calming measures is subject to Limerick City and County Council policy.

“This location will be examined further in the coming weeks as per policy,” he added.
