AN investigation has been launched following a road traffic collision in Limerick city centre which resulted in a car overturning and flipping onto its roof.

The incident happened at New Road, close to John's Square and the main entrance to St John's Hospital, at around 9.20pm this Tuesday.

Emergency services including gardai, paramedics from the National Ambulance Service and units of the fire service from both Cappamore and Shannon attended the scene.

In reply to a query from Limerick Live, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision on John's Street, Limerick this evening Tuesday 16th May, 2023. One elderly male was in the car and removed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Investigations ongoing."

The road leading to Cathedral Place and Garryowen Road was closed following the incident to facilitate the removal of the car and the clearing of the scene.
