THE FIRST ever Brendan and Martin Mulvihill Traditional Music Week took place in Glin last month, marking a poignant but positive milestone in honour of the renowned fiddle players and composers.

The festival was established following the sudden passing of Brendan Mulvihill and celebrated both his and his father Martin’s legacy in Irish traditional music. Brendan and his father were both natives of Glin who spent most of their lives in the United States.

Cllr John Sheahan explained that the idea for the festival grew from a gathering of musicians who had known, played with, or been taught by the Mulvihill family during their decades in the United States, particularly in the vibrant New York traditional music scene. The programme featured workshops, concerts, and lively sessions, with support from local musicians including All-Ireland champions.

While the atmosphere was described as “uplifting” and the week was well received, Cllr Sheahan confirmed the festival ran at a financial deficit. He said increasing attendance will be a key focus for future years, adding that the committee hopes to secure community and financial backing on par with established festivals in Limerick such as the Ashford Festival.

He remained optimistic that the seed has been sown for a lasting annual celebration of music in Glin.
