A YOUNG man was rescued from the Abbey river after he accidentally entered the water in the early hours of the morning.

The alarm was raised by passers-by in Limerick city who saw the man, aged in his 20s, struggling in the river around 3.30am on Saturday morning.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene, located the stricken man and brought him to safety.

The exact circumstances of how he entered the water are not known but it is believed to have been an accident.

Paramedics were called to attend to the man who was suffering from shock and the effects of the cold water but he is expected to make a full recovery.
