Transport firm gives update on long-derelict site in Limerick

The former CIE social club, located at Carey’s Road in the city

CORAS Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), the State transport provider, has said it is exploring alternative uses for a derelict site in the city centre.

The former CIÉ club at Carey’s Road in the city centre has lain idle for more than 30 years, sparking concern.

At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely sought an update on the site.

“They are not looking after the place. They are leaving it to go to rack and ruin. Residents are plagued, more so in the autumn and winter with the anti-social behaviour,” she said.

For its part, CIE confirmed to Limerick Live that it is “keeping this site for operational reasons”.

“Until ultimate decisions are made, alternative uses for the site are being explored in the interim,” a company spokesperson added.

In a written answer to Cllr Kiely, head of property at the council, Jayne Leahy, confirmed that the local authority has what is known as a derelict sites case on the land.

This refers to a situation where land or structures on it are in a condition which take from the character or appearance of the surrounding area.

Council can impose fines on the owners of the site through what are known as derelict site levies.

Limerick Live has learned at one stage last year, CIE owed more than €15,000 for 2023, and were pursued by council’s debt management team.

With the summer months ahead, Cllr Kiely believes it could be used as an area for brass bands to tune up and practice, or perhaps a basketball court.
