Limerick City and County Council shortlisted for Local Authority of the Year

LIMERICK City and County Council has once again been shortlisted for Local Authority of the Year at the prestigious Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.  

The council secured the title in 2023. 

The award recognised the council’s extensive work in promoting Limerick as a positive, inclusive and sustainable place to live, work, visit and invest.  

The Excellence in Local Government Awards, sponsored by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being carried out by Local Authorities all over Ireland.    

Six Limerick City and County Council projects have also been shortlisted for awards in 2024.  

The Limerick Migrant Integration Forum was shortlisted for the Diversity & Inclusion Award, while Riverfest Limerick 2024 was nominated for the Festival of the Year Award.

The Living again: Vacancy, Dereliction and Reuse initiative was shortlisted in the Local Authority Innovation category, with Limerick Regional Athletics Club (LRAH) receiving a nomination for the Municipal District Initiative Award.

Building Economic Resilience in Housing - Modern Methods of Construction was nominated for the Promoting Economic Development Award, and the GoGreenRoutes (2020-2024) Horizon 2020 project made the shortlist for the Sustainable Environment & Biodiversity Award.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran says the award nominations are deserved recognition: “The committed team at Limerick City and County Council consistently delivers outstanding results for the people of Limerick. They lead the charge in enhancing the quality of life for all residents and driving economic growth. Being named as the Local Authority of the Year for 2023 was a testament to their hard work. Remarkably, the 2024 nomination marks the third consecutive year the Council has been a deserved finalist for this prestigious overall award.” 

The Mayor added, “I’m also delighted to see Riverfest, Limerick’s premier festival, shortlisted for Festival of the Year on its 20th anniversary. The Living Again project underscores Limerick’s reputation as a leader in tackling dereliction and vacancy. Our other nominated projects range from environmental efforts to promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering inclusivity, and boosting economic development.” 

The awards will be presented on Thursday, November 21 at a ceremony in Dublin.
