Kilmallock announced as finalist in Going for Gold 2024

Lovely hurling! Kilmallock Tidy Towns in high spirits following their qualification for the final

KILMALLOCK Tidy Towns has been named a finalist in this year’s Going for Gold competition in Limerick.

The team will now be making their way to the final of the competition being held in October this year. Glenroe, Glin, Gouldavoher, Hospital and Kilmeedy are still in with a chance of obtaining a place in the coveted final as the judges will be selecting wildcard finalists in the coming weeks.

Kilmallock Tidy Towns Secretary Ber Hurley said the group was “absolutely and utterly delighted” by the news. “The excitement is great,” she smiled. She said they're delighted with the recognition. “It gives us a boost to carry on and keep going.”

The Tidy Towns group are looking forward to the final of the competition later this year. They also qualified as a wild card finalist last year.

“Last year was great as well. It's a lovely night out actually. It was very entertaining,” said Ms Hurley.

This year, they introduced more biodiverse plants and pollinator-friendly planting around the town. They also established two new flower beds on Railway Road and completed some stone work around one of the rose beds. They've a great array of colour this year that is being much admired.

They also do a lot of litter picking in the area. Ms Hurley said: “We have noticed though that since the return scheme began, the cans and the bottles are not as bad.”

The group recently erected a new sign, saying 'Slán' in the town and Ms Hurley said everyone is complimenting it. They installed two new recycled plastic planters on the Charleville Road with biodiversity and pollinator-friendly plants.

The Tidy Towns group revamped the famine park which they started working on last year. People were buried there with no grave recognition after they died during the famine.

They also continued working on its memorial trees which were introduced by the group's former late chairperson John Tierney in 2016. The concept is that a person, or family, sponsor a tree in memory of their loved ones who have passed away.

Limerick Going for Gold encourages communities to be environmentally aware and keep their neighbourhoods clean and tidy.
A top prize of €10,000 and other monetary prizes are up for grabs this year.
