A WEEKEND celebrating the history and heritage of East Limerick makes its return to Knocklong this Friday as discussions on important topics are set to “delight” all who turn up.
The Knocklong History Weekend has been running for many years and has educated locals on major East Limerick historical events such as the Rescue of Seán Hogan.
Two of the headlining events at this year’s weekend include a discussion on the former IRA chief of staff Liam Lynch following the centenary anniversary of his death and an appraisal of the civil war in the six counties.
“We have professors from universities and experts in their field coming along,” PRO of Knocklong History Rosemary Flanagan said.
Rosemary said the historical group are “quite proud” of how they kept the event running during Covid.
“We held the events virtually. It was incredible that we were able to keep the interest going.”
“The least we can do for those who sacrificed their lives is remember their names,” she added.
On Friday, May 12, the historical weekend commences with a talk to given by Gerard Shannon entitled Liam Lynch: To Declare a Republic. The following day, at 10.30am, will see the seminar Brother Against Brother - an appraisal of the Civil War in Six Counties chaired by Tom Toomey take place.
The latter discussion aims to give a balanced insight into the Civil War which took place between June 1922 and August 1923.
The speakers are Tomas MacConmara, Clare; Liz Gillis, Dublin; John Borgonovo, Cork; John Flannery, Tipperary and Pat McCarthy, Waterford.
