GARDAI in Limerick are warning farmers about the targeting of specific technical equipment.
Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer for Henry Street Garda Station said that thieves are targeting John Deere tractors due to their GPS devices.
Two of these machines were targeted in the county Limerick area between April 3 and April 4 for their tracking devices.
Sergeant Leetch said this is a new crime as these devices are expensive and universal and are transferrable to other agricultural tractors.
"Crime prevention advice is that farmers should have unique markings on the GPS devices so that they are identifiable, the serial number of the GPS device must be recorded and to notify the garage you purchased the John Deere from of the theft as the device is traceable once it is plugged in again.
"If you are offered these devices for sale in unusual or suspicious circumstances refuse to buy them and report this to your local Gardai, these devices are very likely stolen property."
