‘ It brought new life into the championship’

LIMERICK businessman and philanthropist JP McManus knows a thing or 45 about GAA heartbreak.

After the 1973 All-Ireland final win, Mr McManus was famously squeezed through a window into a packed Limerick dressing-room in Croke Park.

He and all Limerick supporters had to wait until 2018 before a Limerick man next lifted Liam MacCarthy on the steps of the Hogan Stand. Now John Kiely’s men have won six All-Irelands in nine seasons.

Mr McManus spoke to Fran Berry of Racing TV at the Galway Races on Wednesday. The former jockey said Limerick winning the All-Ireland hurling championship was fantastic and asked Mr McManus about Mayo’s famous All-Ireland football win which ended 75 years of heartbreak.

“Down Limerick way they always kind of cheer for Kerry but nobody could begrudge Mayo the win.

“It is long overdue. It made an awful lot of people happy, both home and abroad. It brought new life into the championship,” said Mr McManus, who had a winner in Ballybrit on Wednesday with Venusienne ridden by his new number one jockey Harry Cobden.

Mr Berry also asked the Limerick team sponsor about Padraig Harrington being announced earlier on Wednesday as a vice captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup which takes place in Mr McManus’ Adare Manor

“Nobody deserves it more. When Padraig was captain, Luke (Donald) was vice captain so I’d say probably returning the favour. He deserves to be there, he has a lot of knowledge and I’m sure he can only help Luke,” said Mr McManus, who was sporting a pride in Limerick lapel pin.

It is closing in on a year to go until Limerick hosts the Ryder Cup from September 13 - 19, 2027.
